'Girls' reappears onscreen, sufficient awkwardness ensues

GirlsHBO series "Girls" kicked off its second season Sunday, January 13.The first episode of the second season of “Girls” aired on HBO Sunday night, and already it’s clear that the audience will be spared nothing.

Diving right into the sex scenes, uncomfortable encounters and insane situations, Season 2 already promises its viewers a variety of twists throughout the season. Each girl is sure to face her own excess of issues, and viewers are far gone from the drama of three onscreen couples: Hannah and Adam, Marnie and Charlie, and Shoshanna and Ray.

Picking up immediately where it left off, the girls face real-life difficulties that — without the obvious plot exaggerations — may seem similar to the less-than-perfect lives of real girls. Hannah has a new love interest named Sandy (played by Donald Glover — a pleasant surprise), and Adam is in a cast from his accident. Marnie remains single and b*tchy, while Charlie desperately clings to his new girlfriend Audrey. Shoshanna, arguably the most humorous of characters, copes without her virginity and the loss of her frequently mentioned hymen. Her sexual exploits with Ray seem to have gone nowhere, but he still feels affected by her strange electric presence when they reconnect at a party. The wild, free-spirited Jessa returns from her honeymoon a new bride, still completely unaware of her husband’s address because of their rushed marriage.

But it’s not all familiar territory. Elijah — Hannah’s college boyfriend who came out as gay immediately after they broke up — is Hannah’s new roommate and lives in Marnie’s old room. One of the episode’s first scenes features Elijah and Hannah in the same position as Marnie and Hannah in the first season, replicating the almost too-close relationship between the roommates.

The real trouble comes when Elijah and Marnie drunkenly discuss their lives alone, leading to a very unnatural sex scene between them. The pair begins hooking up only to end the tryst on awkward terms. Marnie ends up at Charlie’s apartment, but doesn’t mean to cause trouble between him and his new girlfriend.

“Girls” takes no prisoners in its first episode, and starting with this sex-filled episode littered with clever dialogue, the show’s second run will be sure to live up to the expectations set by its Golden Globe-winning debut season.

2013 Academy Awards nominees released, popular films gain recognition

LesMis2WEBHugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway each received nominations for their performances in "Les Miserables." (MCT Campus)The 2013 Academy Award Nominees were released today, and it's already clear which films made their mark on the silver screen.

Recent releases such as “Lincoln,” “Django Unchained” and “Les Miserables” all have taken a front seat to many of the awards, while other films such as “Silver Linings Playbook” gained nominations in multiple categories from Best Picture to Best Film Editing.

This year provided film aficionados with ample viewing possibilities, and the nomination list represents the variation in production.

“Les Miserables," based on Victor Hugo's novel, hit the mark with stunning performances by Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway — both nominees in this year’s awards. With their musical skills and acting expertise, the two are shoe-ins for wins. Jackman’s performance as Jean Valjean warrants the award for Best Actor, and Hathaway’s solo in “Les Miserables” puts her in front of the other nominees.

“Django Unchained” gained much recognition once it came out in theaters, and clearly Tarantino’s mad brilliance has succeeded once again. The film was nominated for five categories, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

Other films made minimal appearances on the list, but fans of “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” will be pleased to see three nominations among the film greats. “Life of Pi” also took a place among film greats, with its nominations in Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.

In the animated category, scary films such as “ParaNorman” and “Frankenweenie” took their place with “Brave” — the obvious winner among the more childish films.

Like every year, the Oscar nominations vary greatly and cross genres. But there are a few films that will bridge the gap between nominees and winners, and it’s clear which ones those are.

Still, there are a few films that viewers know will make the cut, and if “Les Miserables,” “Django Unchained” and “Silver Linings Playbook” miss out on the action, many fans and critics will be surprised because of their exceptional film production.
