The small crowd gathered at the side of the pool erupted into cheers as the final standings flickered onto the scoreboard. Several members of the women’s swimming and diving team sat in pink Pitt shirts by the edge of the pool and called out their congratulations to sophomore diver Aaron Snyder.
Seeded sixth out of eight divers in the final round of the Big East Championships on Saturday evening at Trees Pool, Pitt’s Snyder finished with a score of 286.80 to claim second place in the men’s 1-meter diving event and earned All-Big East honors for his effort.
“I was really excited to finish second tonight,” Snyder said in a release on Pitt’s website. “There was a lot of great competition. With the help of my team, coach Julian Krug and coach John Dusch, I was able to calm my nerves and perform well.”
Snyder improved on his eighth-place finish from last season.
Pitt junior Erik Moore also reached the finals with Snyder. Moore finished in sixth place, a jump from his 11th-place performance last year. He scored 266.80.
Notre Dame freshman Nicholas Nemetz claimed first place in the event. He finished with a score of 322.30 and the Big East named him the Most Outstanding Diver of 2012.
