Pitt football and men’s basketball receive new verbal commitments

Even though the Pitt football season is far from over and the basketball season isn’t even underway yet, both teams each picked up a new verbal commitment to their 2017 recruiting classes on Wednesday.

The Panthers received their 16th verbal commitment to next year’s football recruiting class from Charles Reeves and the Pitt men’s basketball team added a third commitment to its 2017 class from guard Marcus Carr.

Reeves, a 6-foot-5, 240-pound tight end from Steubenville, Ohio, announced his decision Wednesday morning via Twitter.

“I wanna thank everyone who recruited me but I would like to say that I’m verbally committing to the University of Pittsburgh,” Reeves wrote on Twitter.

Reeves is a three-star prospect and the No. 27 tight-end prospect in the 2017 class according to Rivals. He chose to attend Pitt over offers from several other Division I schools, including a slew of Big Ten programs such as Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Penn State and Wisconsin.

Along with two-star recruits Grant Carrigan and Tyler Sear — two local products who both committed on Aug. 18 to join Pitt’s 2017 class — Reeves gives the Panthers a third tight end in Pat Narduzzi’s second full recruiting class as head coach.

As for Carr, he is a 6-foot-2, 160-pound point guard from Montverde, Florida. According to Rivals, he is a three-star prospect and chose to join the Panthers over offers from schools such as Baylor, Cincinnati, and Pitt head coach Kevin Stallings’ former team, Vanderbilt.

Pitt’s Rivals affiliate, Panther-lair, broke the news of Carr’s commitment Wednesday morning.

The Panthers now have two guards and three verbal commitments overall in Stallings’ first full recruiting class as head coach. Carr joins Aaron Thompson –– another 6-foot-2, three-star point guard according to Rivals –– and Terrell Brown, a 6-foot-9, three-star power forward.

Although recruits can announce their verbal commitments now, they still have several months to change their mind. Football recruits in the 2017 class can officially sign National Letters of Intent Feb. 1, 2017, while National Signing Day for 2017 basketball recruits is April 12, 2017.
