At the No. 1 singles spot, she whipped Bucknell’s Paulina Gamboa 6-0, 6-0 on Friday. Then, on Saturday, she took out Ira Aleksova from St. John’s 6-1, 6-2. She also won both of her doubles matches. ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘[Adams] won very convincingly over two strong opponents [in singles],’ said Pitt coach George Dieffenbach. ‘She is playing some very good tennis right now.’ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ Adams’ partner, senior Kristy Borza, who missed most of the fall with an injury to the head of her femur bone, won at No. 3 singles on Friday 6-2, 6-2 over Lauren Lucido, to go along with her pair of doubles wins. ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ It was Borza’s first singles match since her injury, but Dieffenbach called the doubles victories real confidence boosters. ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘Winning in doubles gives the team a real mental edge going into the singles,’ said Dieffenbach. ‘We are fortunate to have [Borza] back in the lineup. She’s still not 100 percent, but she’s giving it her best.’ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ At No. 5 singles, senior Christie D’Achille won both of her matches. She beat Ashley Globerman 6-1, 6-4 on Friday, and Nakita Austin 6-4, 6-2 on Saturday. ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ The only match of the weekend that went the full three sets resulted in a win for Pitt. Junior Sabrina Visram knocked off St. John’s Ksenia Mikhaylova 5-7, 7-5, 10-5 at No. 2 singles. ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘It was a great comeback for [Visram],’ said Dieffenbach. ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ Last year, the Panthers finished No. 9 out of 16 in the Big East. One of their goals this season is to finish in the top half. A winning record in the conference should accomplish that. ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ Dieffenbach feels that if his team, which is one of the more aggressive squads in the conference, can balance aggressiveness with consistency it should have a winning record. ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘Every time we go into a match we are confident,’ said Dieffenbach. ‘We always expect to win and give it our best.’ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ Friday’s win was Pitt’s fourth consecutive victory over Bucknell (3-2). Pitt had not played St. John’s (0-2, 0-1 Big East) since 2005, when the Red Storm won 5-1. ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘St. John’s always has a lot of talent,’ said Dieffenbach. ‘They have a lot of international players and are always a good team. It was great to get our first conference win against them.’ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ ‘ Pitt’s next match is at West Virginia at noon on Wednesday.
