Pitt has had good fortune against the Golden Flashes in recent years, as it is the third consecutive year that the Panthers beat them. Pitt coach Sue-Moy Chin said that although her team won, it was a tough first half. ‘We started out really slow,’ said Chin. Although Pitt outshot Kent State 6-5 in the first half, neither team had a legitimate scoring chance in the first 45 minutes. Pitt broke the scoreless drought in the 49th minute when sophomore Laura Berbert rocketed a shot passed the Kent State goalie, Kelly Sherwood. It was Berbert’s first goal of the season, and it came off a set piece 25 yards from the net. Weather conditions were very poor throughout the game, but Chin said that it wasn’t a big deal. ‘Both teams had to play through it,’ she said. As the weather conditions worsened, Pitt’s chances increased. The Panthers outshot Kent State by five in the second half and dominated the time of possession. Freshman Katelyn Ruhe continued to improve, breaking away in the 82nd minute and nearly putting the Panthers up by two. But Sherwood made an impressive stop, keeping Pitt’s lead at one. Ruhe finished the game with five of Pitt’s 13 shots. Chin said that while she expects Ruhe to be an important part of Pitt’s success this season, she has some work to do. ‘She is still finding her way,’ said Chin. St. Bonaventure 2, Pitt 1 Pitt lost a heartbreaker on Sunday, giving up a last-second, game-winning goal to St. Bonaventure that ended the game at 2-1. The game was moved to Upper St. Clair High School because of the poor field conditions at Founders Field. Pitt got on the board first when Ruhe scored her team-leading fourth goal in the 26th minute. Ruhe capitalized on a loose ball near the penalty box and didn’t hesitate to shoot it behind St. Bonaventure goalkeeper Nicole Markert. Pitt controlled the time of possession in the first half and outshot St. Bonaventure 11-5. But Pitt failed to capitalize on a variety of set piece and corner kick opportunities in the first 45 minutes. ‘ ‘We haven’t finished on enough set pieces,’ said Chin of the numerous opportunities Pitt squandered in the first half. The second half started with an interesting twist, as Pitt sophomore defender Rebecca Fraser lost her cool in the 48th minute, picking up a red card. Fraser was automatically ejected, which forced Pitt to play with one fewer player. ‘We played really well in the second half, considering we were a man down,’ said Chin. Chin added that Pitt was the better team in the second half but just didn’t capitalize on some key opportunities. Pitt held off St. Bonaventure until the Bonnies tied the game at one off a set piece taken by defender Kaitlin Krisko. The free kick was taken from 25 yards, beating Pitt goalkeeper Morie Kephart in the 79th minute. Anna Cunningham assisted Krisko on the goal. Tied at one, the game seemed destined for overtime heading into the 90th minute. But Krisko and Cunningham hooked up for another goal, as Cunningham finished by putting a header behind Kephart just as time expired. St. Bonaventure scored both of its goals off set pieces. The loss dropped Pitt back under .500, as its record fell to 3-4-0. Pitt’s next game is the biggest of the young season, when it faces West Virginia on the road on Thursday night. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Morgantown. West Virginia is coming off a double-overtime game vs. James Madison this past Sunday. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, giving the Mountaineers a 4-1-2 record.
