The Pitt Panthers’ men’s basketball team will open its 2015-2016 season in Japan, according to a press release sent out Friday morning.

The team will square off against the Gonzaga Bulldogs in Okinawa, Japan on Friday, November 13th of 2015, participating in the fourth annual Armed Forces Classic. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN. The three previous contests were Connecticut vs. Michigan State in Germany in 2012, Georgetown vs. Oregon in Korea in 2013, and today’s matchup of Louisville vs. Minnesota in Puerto Rico.

The matchup with Gonzaga will be the first time the two programs meet in men’s basketball.

“It’s truly an honor to have the opportunity to play in such a great event,” Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon said in the press release. “Our goal is always to play in the top events and the Armed Forces Classic certainly ranks among the best.”

The Panthers open their 2014-2015 Friday night, as the team will take on the Niagara Purple Eagles at the Petersen Events Center at 7 p.m.
