Pitt wrestling knocks off No. 10 Edinboro

Pitt defeated No. 10 Edinboro Thursday night, proving that the Panthers earned their No. 14 preseason ranking.

Despite an early 10-3 deficit, Pitt came back to win the final five bouts and win the match 25-13.

Dom Forys set the tone for Pitt, starting the match with a 6-0 win over No. 18 Kory Mines of Edinboro, giving the freshman his first career win over a ranked opponent.

Though the Fighting Scots started the match out with a 10-3 lead, Pitt won the final five bouts, beginning with the 165-pound bout, to seal the win.

Pitt redshirt freshman Cody Wiercioch started the late rally with a 5-3 decision over Casey Fuller in the 165-pound bout. Pitt’s heavyweight wrestler John Rizzo sealed the win for Pitt over Edinboro’s Warren Bosch at the 285-pound bout.

Two of Edinboro’s top wrestlers, No. 1 AJ Schopp and No. 2 Mitchell Port, won the 133-pound and 141-pound bouts, respectively.

In a bout between individually-ranked wrestlers, No. 5 Max Thomusseit defeated No. 10 Vic Avery of Edinboro, 5-3 in the 184-pound weight class.

Pitt’s next match is its first home match of the year, as the Panthers face Bucknell on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
