Weekend Sports Recap: Volleyball salvages sour results

Pitt Athletics found itself on the wrong end of a disappointing weekend. While both cross country teams failed to qualify for the NCAA Championship meet, women’s basketball and wrestling compounded those losses with stinging defeats. The second-ranked volleyball team provided the lone bright spot of the weekend, picking up an ACC title and a spot in the NCAA Tournament with a win over Duke.

Pitt women’s basketball won its home opener in dramatic fashion Monday night, coming back from a 19-point deficit in the second half to beat Central Connecticut State.

Traveling down south to play against a tough opponent to start the season, Pitt women’s basketball faded in the second half and lost 74-58 at UCF on Wednesday afternoon.

White welcomes new year in women’s basketball rebuild

Leaves crunch underfoot, temperatures drop and basketballs hit the hardwood — November is finally here, meaning that Pitt women’s basketball will open their second season under head coach Lance White this month. White is charged with the tall task of rebuilding Pitt’s struggling women’s basketball program and has already gotten to work revamping the middling Panthers.

Pitt escapes exhibition with a narrow win

Typically, a preseason exhibition game is an opportunity for more talented teams to tune up for the regular season against a lower-division opponent. But for Pitt women’s basketball, Friday night’s exhibition against Pitt-Johnstown was another story. The Panthers struggled mightily, escaping with a narrow 76-62 win over the Division II Mountain Cats.
