Despite a loss in its first contest of the 2015 NCAA Tournament, the Pitt softball team survived on Saturday, winning its two Sunday games to remain in play for a Super Regional berth.
The Panthers could not afford a misstep in either game following their loss to Cal on Friday, as the Regional round is double-elimination. They avoided erring in their first game of the day, overcoming a 3-0 first inning deficit to win their contest against Oakland 6-3.
Trailing 2-1 going into the inning with their season on the line in their second game of the evening, the Panthers were led by a five-run fifth inning highlighted by a Jenna Modic grand slam, upsetting Cal in a rematch of Friday’s game by a final score of 6-3.
Freshman pitcher Kayla Harris shined as well, finishing the game with 10 strikeouts.
With the two wins, Pitt advances to play Michigan on Sunday. With the Wolverines undefeated in the tournament, the Panthers will have to defeat them twice to advance.
The first game’s first pitch is slated 3:30 p.m. on ESPNU. The second game – if necessary – is tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m., and will also air on ESPNU.
