Football team announces punishments for four players

Two Pitt football players have been dismissed from the team and two more have been suspended indefinitely following recent run-ins with the law.

Pitt head football coach Paul Chryst announced Tuesday the dismissal of junior tight end Drew Carswell and junior defensive back Eric Williams from the team. Junior defensive tackle Khaynin Mosley-Smith and freshman quarterback Tra’Von Chapman remain on indefinite suspension, according to a statement from the Pitt Athletic Department.

Police issued summonses for possession of drug paraphernalia to Carswell, Williams and Mosley-Smith last Friday after searching a house on the 3300 block of Juliet Street in South Oakland where the three players were present. Police allegedly found heroin and drug paraphernalia after searching the residence, according to the criminal complaints. Preliminary hearings are scheduled for all three players on May 28 in the Pittsburgh Municipal Court.

Carswell, Williams and Mosley-Smith did not respond to emails requesting comment.

The Pitt Athletic Department could not be reached for comment on why Mosley-Smith received only a suspension despite receiving the same charges as Carswell and Williams.

Chryst also announced in the press release that Chapman has been indefinitely suspended after being arrested over the weekend in Kent, Oh. According to court documents, officers from the Kent Police Department arrested and charged Chapman with one count of assault and one count unlawful restraint.

Chapman did not respond to an email requesting comment.

According to court documents, Chapman has been released on his own recognizance after his father, former Kent State assistant coach Thad Jemison, posted Chapman’s bail.

A pretrial hearing is scheduled for him on May 28 in the Kent Branch of the Portage County Municipal Court.

The Kent Police Department declined to comment on the case.
