Mystery surrounds mayor’s recent absences

A contingent of local media members waited outside Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl’s office in City Hall Thursday afternoon anticipating an announcement from him regarding a string of absences from recent events in which he was scheduled to participate.

As of press times, the mayor’s office had not disclosed further details.

Speculation surrounding Ravenstahl’s status peaked Wednesday night after he missed a candidates’ night event at Perry Traditional Academy in the North Side. Kevin Quigley, one of Ravenstahl’s close friends and supporters, cited “personal issues” as the reason for the current mayor’s absence, and said the mayor would make an announcement in the next few days, according to The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Those close to the mayor say he’s dedicated his time to his mother, who’s currently suffering from an undisclosed illness, also reported by the Post-Gazette.

Ravenstahl is currently seeking re-election for mayor, facing off against Councilman Bill Peduto and City Controller Michael Lamb.

Ravenstahl recently came under fire after it was revealed that members of his security detail were implicated in an investigation of the Pittsburgh Police Department that led to Police Chief Nate Harper’s forced resignation on Feb. 20.

Among those voicing speculation about the mayor’s future was Pennsylvania Democratic Chairman Jim Burn, who said he was doubtful Ravenstahl would seek a third term in office.

Burn told Pittsburgh news station WPXI that he spoke with Ravenstahl Saturday night during a fundraiser at North Catholic High School.

“I suspect he’s not going to be seeking another term. I suspect he’s going to finish this term, but I suspect he’s going to bow out from the upcoming primary and the local endorsement process,” Burn said to WPXI. .
