As the sky is painted orange and pink,
I catch you leaning as if to see it.
But your eyes remain shut, and so I think,
For however long it takes, I will sit
By your side, holding your hand till it’s time
For you to leave me. I’ll touch the darkness,
Push it far away with all of its grime,
So the fierce sky may color the starkness
Of these vile walls and the pain in my chest
That comes as I tear my heart out to lay
Beside you. I’ll comfort you as you rest,
I must calm your lungs, put your fears at bay.
I pray you know that I will not leave you
Together, we will watch this final view.
