Pitt student hit by Port Authority bus near WPU

A female Pitt student was struck by a Port Authority bus near the William Pitt Union in Oakland at approximately 9:30 a.m. Monday.

Jim Ritchie, Chief Communications Officer for the Port Authority, said in an email that the accident occurred in the bus lane at Fifth Avenue and University Place.

The student was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital for treatment, according to Ritchie, along with a passenger on the bus who received a relatively minor injury.

The bus driver was also taken to UPMC Presbyterian after the accident, and Port Authority is investigating the cause of the accident.

“The operator will undergo drug/alcohol testing, which is the Authority’s standard process,” Ritchie said.

In an email, a UPMC spokesperson declined to comment, citing internal policy that forbids the release of information about patient conditions.

When reached for comment, Joe Miksch, a Pitt spokesperson, said the university was looking into the incident.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
