Updated: Pitt freshman found dead on campus

A Pitt freshman was found dead in his Tower B room Friday night.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office said that 18-year-old Tyler Whitman of Wallenpaupack Lake Estates was pronounced dead at 10:54 p.m. The office said that the cause of death was suicide.

Pitt Police Sergeant Dan Papale said Whitman was found in his room by a resident assistant. His family was notified later that evening.

Students in residence halls were notified of the death by an email from Residence Life Director Shawn Brooks.

“Tyler’s passing has created a huge void in the lives of all who knew him. Our most heartfelt condolences go out to all of his friends and family,” the email said.

According to the website of the James Wilson Funeral Home, the funeral and Mass of Christian Burial was held the morning of Friday, March 9.

The obituary said that Whitman was born in Ridge, N.Y., and graduated from Wallenpaupack Area High School, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and the varsity tennis team.

Brooks’ email included the phone number of the University Counseling Center and a reminder of the “Talk About It” depression-awareness campaign.
