One is a UPMC employee, but they did not identify the suspected shooter as the other.
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner identified UPMC employee, Michael Schaab, 25, as one of two victims killed in the shooting.
At a press conference Thursday, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl confirmed that there were two people killed in the shooting, including the man now identified as Schaab, and the man who is suspected to be the gunman, although Ravenstahl couldn’t confirm that until the investigation is over.
The Medical Examiner said that they have not identified the other male who was killed in the shooting.
According to a press release from UPMC, Schaab worked as a therapist with geriatric patients. He worked at UPMC since 2008.
The Medical Examiner said Schaab was pronounced dead at 3 p.m. Thursday after a gunman opened fire at approximately 1:40 p.m. in a public area on the first floor of Western Psychiatric Institute.
Donald Yealy, chair of emergency medicine at UPMC, said in a press release posted on UPMC’s website, seven other people, including UPMC employees, and a hospital visitor were injured in the shooting, all of whom are expected to survive.
Two people, a 64 year old female and a 49 year old male, are in serious condition, while a 46 year old male, a 54 year old female, and a 35 year old female are in fair condition, according to UPMC’s website. Two additional people were treated and released yesterday.
