EWL Title Match Highlights: Pitt v. Edinboro

The Pitt News recaps Pitt Wrestling’s third straight win for the EWL title.

More than 2,000 fans packed the Fitzgerald Field House to watch the No. 9 Pitt wrestling team (12-1, 5-0 EWL) face No. 20 Edinboro (9-2, 4-0) in a match that decided the 2012 Eastern Wrestling League regular season champion.

Both teams entered the meeting undefeated in conference play, but the Panthers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The 26-10 victory gave Pitt its third consecutive EWL title.

No. 24 Shelton Mack recorded the biggest victory of the night for the Panthers after his 3-2 upset victory over No. 7 A.J. Schopp gave Pitt an early 7-0 lead.

No. 15 Tyler Nauman pulled off another crucial upset for the Panthers with his 7-4 decision over No. 6 Dave Habat, restoring Pitt’s seven-point advantage at 10-3.

No. 16 Anthony Zanetta, Donnie Tasser, Tyler Wilps, No. 20 Ethan Headlee and No. 32 Andy Vaughan also picked up victories for the Panthers, who will now prepare for the EWL Championships on March 4th.
