I would have liked to attend the Sept. 11 memorial event held at Soldiers & Sailors. But this year I settled for a moment of silence in my dorm room instead. The service at Soldiers & Sailors included a prayer — something that alienates those with differing or no religious affiliations. The intent of the memorial is to remember the fallen. The victims of the attacks were certainly not limited to Christians, so why should only the Christians be represented?

I am by no means suggesting that religion be censored, but merely excluded from something that people of diverse religious affiliations would like to participate in. To keep things fair, you would need a representative of every faith, which isn’t practical. Although religion is a vital component of many people’s lives, it should not be associated with a service open to the public.
