At least one person was injured in an accident on Pitt’s campus where a car drove off the road… Updated at 2:56 p.m.
A vehicle struck a 19-year-old woman in a wheelchair at about 1 p.m. today at the intersection of Forbes Avenue and Schenley Drive.
The woman has since been transported to a hospital, although police did not say which one. Pittsburgh police sergeant James Vogel said that the woman in the wheelchair appeared to have sustained a fractured arm, but police said she appeared to be stable when she was removed from the scene.
There were two cars involved in the accident — a female in a tan vehicle and a male driver in a white vehicle both traveling on Forbes Avenue. After a collision, the tan vehicle traveled onto the sidewalk along Forbes Avenue, hitting the woman in the wheelchair, pushing her several feet before coming to a stop.
“The wheelchair was well within the sidewalk,” Pittsburgh police sergeant James Vogel said.
Police couldn’t confirm the exact series of events that led to the accident. They said they will be reviewing footage from street cameras to confirm reports.
“We also have a person who may or may not have been driving too fast,” Vogel said.
Vogel said that both drivers will be cited, but did not say for what.
Shawn Pierce was managing the Entertainment Your Way stand on the sidewalk on the corner of Schenley Drive and Forbes Avenue and saw what happened when the accident occurred.
“Everyone else was able to move, but the woman in the wheelchair — she didn’t have a chance,” Pierce said.
