Track and field: Panthers compete in final team competitions

The women’s track and field team placed ninth out of 53 teams at the Eastern College Athletic… The women’s track and field team placed ninth out of 53 teams at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships this weekend, while the men’s team finished 26th out of 49 teams at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America Championships.

It was the final team competition for both squads.

Duke won the ECAC and the IC4A Championships with 73.75 and 74.5 points, respectively. Both events, held at Princeton University, marked the final team events for the Panthers for the 2011 outdoor season.

Cambrya Jones, a junior, took first for the women in the 200-meter dash with a time with 23.73, earning Pitt 10 team points.

Sophomore Ashley Woodford finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time for 11.86, adding eight team points, while senior Lanesha Pugh took sixth place and earned three points with a time of 12.19.

With 4,633 points in the heptathlon, sophomore Elizabeth Kline set a personal best and scored six team points. She won the event’s 200-meter dash and the long jump and finished second in the 100-meter hurdles and the 800-meter run.

The men’s team was led by junior Jermaine Lowery who finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.09. He scored eight points for the team.

Tashaun Hill, a sophomore, finished sixth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.37, and freshman Reginald Steele IV took eighth in the long jump with a distance of 7.00 meters. Hill earned three points, while Steele added one to the Panthers’ total.

Senior Dan Kwiatkowski’s 16.07 meter toss in the shot put earned him eighth place and one team point.
