Pitt to discipline nine staff, three faculty not complying with vaccine mandate

Pitt has begun the process of terminating the nine staff members, and disciplining the three faculty members, who are not in compliance with the University’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate.

The University Times first reported on the move Thursday.

Pitt announced a vaccine mandate last semester, which required all students, staff and faculty to be vaccinated with the first and second doses of a COVID-19 vaccine, or submit an exemption request, by Dec. 6.

According to the University Times, Chancellor Patrick Gallagher said in late January that 22 staff members were non-compliant, and since then, 13 had come into compliance. The remaining nine staff members are in the process of being terminated.

A Pitt spokesperson told the University Times that four faculty members were originally not in compliance, and while one faculty member has come into compliance, the other three “continue to move through the disciplinary process.”

While non-compliant staff and faculty face termination, non-compliant students face disenrollment and loss of on-campus housing for the spring semester. Gallagher told the University Times that as of late January, there were 32 non-compliant students.
