Haywood, who was the coach at Miami of Ohio the last two seasons, was an assistant coach at Notre Dame under Charlie Weis.
According to the report, St. Joseph County Police arrested Haywood around 4 p.m. at a home where a woman and himself have a child. The police report said it was a custody issue and the woman asked Haywood to leave but an altercation ensued and the woman told police Haywood grabbed her by the arm and neck and pushed her.
The Pitt Athletic Department said in an e-mail Friday night that it is aware of Haywood’s arrest and that the University “expects the highest standards of conduct from its employees, including its coaches, and any breach of those standards is a very serious matter.” It declined to comment further until more information became available.
In his second season at Miami, Haywood led the Redhawks to the Mid-American Conference Championship. Afterwards, he resigned to take over the job at Pitt, replacing Dave Wannstedt.
