The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Allegheny County until 5 p.m. tonight. A thunder storm watch for western Pennsylvania is in effect until 10 p.m.
Brad Rehak, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, said students should try to get in an enclosed building or car with the windows rolled up.
Students who are walking or bicycling to class should track the storm online before going outside. If they do get caught in the storm, Rehak said they should go indoors and “weather the storm.”
People should be on the lookout for damaging winds and continuous lightning, the alert said.
“This is an extremely dangerous situation. Seek shelter now inside a sturdy structure and stay away from windows,” it said.
“You don’t want to stand under a lone tree,” Rehak added.
