At least 2,496 students held blue and white flashlights to form the Pitt logo in the Petersen Events Center about 10 a.m.
The Guiness Book of World Records must confirm the record for it to become official. Officials timers were on hand and video was taken of the 10-minute event. Kelly Frye and Scott Stiller of WTAE acted as official witnesses.
The previous record was set by Full Sail University in Winter Park, Fl., in January, when 528 students held flashlights.
