Port Authority bus strikes pedestrian at Fifth and Bellefield

A Pittsburgh Port Authority bus struck a woman at the intersection of Fifth and Bellefield… A Port Authority bus struck a woman at the intersection of Fifth and Bellefield avenues during rush hour Tuesday, obstructing traffic and sparking an investigation by Port Authority Police.

Medics transported the woman, who had a head injury, to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, said Port Authority spokesman Jim Ritchie. He could not comment on the woman’s condition, but Ritchie said she was conscious and speaking with police at the scene.

The incident began shortly before 4 p.m., when an inbound 61C attempted to turn onto Fifth Avenue from Bellefield Avenue.

The bus stopped at the light, Ritchie said. When the light turned green the bus started to make the left turn and struck the woman, he said.

More than six police cars from the Port Authority and Pitt police responded to the incident, which blocked traffic along Bellefield until about 4:30 p.m. Traffic along Fifth was partially obstructed as well.

Ritchie declined to release the driver’s name.

“We can’t release that information while we are still investigating the incident,” he said. “I can say that any driver involved in an accident is taken off of driving duty while the Port Authority Police and Bus Operation Division examine the case. We’re still gathering the relevant information.”

Most police left the scene by 4:30 p.m.

The bus involved was still sitting, empty on the north side of Fifth Avenue at 5:30 p.m.
