Pitt police issue crime alert after sexual assault

The Pitt Police reported a sexual assault in North Oakland that occurred in the early morning hours of March 3.

A woman reported she was approached on the 200 block of Melwood Avenue around 2:10 a.m. and sexually assaulted by a male who brandished a knife in front of her, hit her in the face and stole her phone.

City police communicated the assault to Pitt police around 3:40 a.m. and described the suspect as a thin male between 30 and 40 years old wearing a long sleeve black shirt, cargo pants and a ski mask.

The University sent out a Crime Alert to students and faculty on Sunday morning detailing the attack. Anyone with information regarding the suspect is advised to call the City police at 412-422-6520 or the Pitt police at 412-624-2121.

The Crime Alert also listed resources for students, including the Pittsburgh Action Against Rape and Resolve Crisis Services.

The Pitt police also recommend that students download the Rave Guardian app, which they can use while walking alone and in case they need to quickly get in contact with the police.
