Track & Field: Numerous Panthers successful on trip to Morgan State

The Pitt track and field team won numerous events, both as a team and on an individual level,… The Pitt track and field team won numerous events, both as a team and on an individual level, at the Morgan State Legacy Meet at Hughes Stadium April 16 and 17.

For the women, Brianna Broyles won the 400-meter hurdles with her season-best time of 1:00.47. Broyles won the 100-meter hurdles on the same day. She finished with a time of 13.88, a second season-best for her.

Freshmen Brittany Carroll and Elizabeth Kline placed fourth and seventh, respectively, in the 100-meter hurdle finals. Carroll and Kline qualified for the Big East Championships, and Kline is also eligible for the 400-meter hurdles in the conference championships, as she finished with a time of 1:03.43.

Three Panthers competed in the finals of the 100-meter dash and qualified for the ECAC Championships. Sophomore Cambrya Jones won the event with her season-best of 11.67 seconds. Junior Da’Lynn Mills finished third at 11.74, and freshman Ashley Woodford finished at 12.09 seconds.

Jones later dominated the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.97. Senior Kaetlyn Brown finished fourth in the same event and placed second with a score of 56.77 in the 400-meter dash, as well.

The junior class made an especially notable impact at the meet for the female Panthers.

Tory Toso won the pole vault event, and Kelsey Voltz won the javelin with a throw of 36.52.

Sarah Anderson won the hammer throw with a 51.67. Having drastically out-scored second place by more than 5 meters, she qualified for the Big East and ECAC Championships.

Anita James and Wunmi Fapohunda will compete in the Big East Championships in the triple jump event. James placed second at 12.02 meters, while Fapohunda, who also earned third place in the long jump, finished immediately after her at 11.78.

The men had a slightly more even distribution of top-three finishes among the classes.

Sophomore Folarin Ijelu won the triple jump at 14.70 meters. He finished third in the long jump with a 7.02-meter distance.

The 4-by-400 relay team of sophomores — Dontave Cowsette, Jerome Lowery, Jermaine Lowery and Elliot Rhodes — finished third with a time of 3:26.98.

Cowsette won the 1500-meter, and sophomore Greg Kareis finished the 800-meter in second place.

Junior Garrett Larkin recorded two first place finishes, one in the hammer throw and the other in shot put. In the latter event, Larkin tossed a distance of 15.59 meters, qualifying him for the Big East Championships.

Freshmen Tashaun Hill and Caleb Matthews qualified for the conference championships in the 110-meter hurdles. Hill placed second at 14.89 seconds, and Matthews finished third at 15.04 seconds.

The men and women are off to run the Penn Relays this weekend in Philadelphia at Franklin Field. It is the largest relay meet in the world and considered to be the greatest annual spectacle in track and field.

This year, Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt will run in the 4-by-100 events in the “USA vs. The World,” which is to be televised on ESPN2 April 24 from 8 to 10 p.m.
