At 8:12 p.m. on Tuesday evening, Summer Lee was declared the winner against James Hayes for Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District. Lee is the incumbent Democratic winner, earning her second term to a U.S. House seat.
The 12th Congressional District of Pennsylvania is located in southwestern Pennsylvania, including Pittsburgh, most of Allegheny County and some of Westmoreland County.
Lee’s campaign focused on “economic justice,” infrastructure, voting rights and LGBTQ+ rights among other issues. Hayes pushed for economic development, supporting the police and backing Israel. Lee, on the other hand, has been critical of Israel’s militant response in Gaza.
Lee is Pennsylvania’s first Black woman elected to Congress and is a member of the “Squad” in Congress, a group of left-wing, progressive Democrat House members.
