The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for today — starting at noon and lasting until 6 p.m. tomorrow — alerting Pittsburghers of a forecasted 6 to 12 inches of snowfall.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation also issued an advisory yesterday, warning drivers to pack an emergency survival kit.

“Travel during the storm will be extremely risky, and motorists really need to ask themselves if their trip is an absolute necessity or if it can be avoided until after the storm has passed,” a PennDOT statement said.

Drivers should have nonperishable food, water, a blanket, a small shovel and warm clothes with them, it said.
