In their second meeting, Board President Charlie Shull announced SGB’s attempt to move future meetings to Nordy’s Place on the ground floor of the Union as a continuation of its “Behind the Glass Door” initiative.
“This is part of our goal to become more accessible to students,” Shull said.
Shull also discussed “Pitt’s Bucket Brigade for Haiti,” a cooperative effort between Pitt and the local Brother’s Brother Foundation, an organization that promotes international health and education.
The “Bucket Brigade” is an effort to fill 500 five-gallon buckets with hygiene products to contribute to relief efforts. Pitt hopes to distribute the buckets throughout various campus buildings to collect donations during the next several weeks.
Shull appealed to any students willing and able to take in one of the Haitian orphans to arrive in Pittsburgh in the wake of the disaster. He said that although some Pitt students might be willing, he suspected able ones might be scarce.
Individual Board members took turns restating commitment to their campaign promises, from Phil LaRues’s promises on reforming Pitt’s environmental sustainability policies, to Laura Paiewonsky’s and Sam Rezaeian’s push for food service change.
As the new SGB settles in, the allocations process runs with little discussion. Unanimous votes reigned at last night’s meeting, with Rezaeian as the most vocal Board member. He attempted to build some rapport with student groups concerning their funding requests.
As their first month draws to a close, SGB is still looking for students to apply for committee chair positions. Currently, Matt Grau of the allocations committee is SGB’s only committee chair.
Applications for committee positions are due at the end of the month.
