Police Chief: More than 100 arrested in Oakland

The most common charges, he said, were disorderly conduct, criminal mischief and failure to disperse.

Between 100 and 200 people gathered around 10 p.m. Friday to either partake in or watch what was said to be an anti-police demonstration in Schenley Plaza.

One man on a megaphone claimed that the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks were a conspiracy.

Police declared the gathering an unlawful assembly at 10:42 p.m. and told people to disperse.

The problem, Delaney said, was that the park closes at 11 p.m.

“We could not have what happened last night,” he said.

Delaney said he had no way of knowing how long it would take the police to transport people arrested Friday night to the county jail.

“On a Saturday night,” he said, “the jail is probably gonna be full or everyone coming down there.”

Delaney said city police made the majority of the arrests, with Pitt police making a few others.

Thursday night, city police arrested 42 people in a demonstration-turned-riot that resulted in damage to at least 10 Oakland businesses.

To check the status of someone who has been arrested, call 412-350-2015.
