Baseball: Honors piling up for Sedon

After a successful 2008-09 season, Pitt baseball’s Chris Sedon has gained national recognition… After a successful 2008-09 season, Pitt baseball’s Chris Sedon has gained national recognition for his play.

Sedon, a transfer from Lackawanna College in Lancaster, Pa., excelled during his junior year and was named to the Louisville Slugger TPX All-America First Team.

“I was astonished when I heard that news,” Sedon said. “My coach called me at nine in the morning and I was still half asleep. I couldn’t believe it.”

The first team is selected by the staff of Collegiate Baseball newspaper and takes into consideration a player’s performance up to regional playoffs. This year’s 17-player roster included 13 conference players or pitchers of the year.

Sedon is the third Panther to receive the honor. Jim Negrych and P.J. Hiser were named to the team in 2006 and 2004, respectively.

Along with batting .398 last season, Sedon broke Panther single-season records for home runs (22), total bases (160) and runs scored (65).

For Pitt coach Joe Jordano, this award comes as a result of Sedon’s work ethic.

“Chris deserves every accolade that is afforded to him,” Jordano said. “He worked extremely hard both on the field and off. That dedication and commitment came to fruition this season. My staff and I could not be more pleased that others have recognized and acknowledged this effort.”

Sedon was also named to the All-Big East First Team selection and recognized on the Big East Conference Weekly Honor Roll four times.

He was also recently recognized to the All-Ping! Baseball Third Team. The All-Ping! teams consist of 125 — roughly the top 1 percent — collegiate baseball players across the country.

“Seeing my name with guys like [2009 No. 1 draft pick Steven] Strasberg was pretty crazy,” he said. “It all started to sink in how big of an accomplishment it was.”
