Remember when your mom told you not to eat with your hands?
Well, Sodexo is telling you to forget about that.
Sodexo, after seeing a food waste decrease during a trayless dining period last month, announced on Tuesday that it will no longer provide utensils to students at its Pitt campus facilities.
Sodexo calls it the ‘Use Less’ program, said spokesman Johnny Tremain. Tremain estimated the measure will save 10 million gallons of water per year, more than enough to fill the pool in Trees Hall, which Sodexo plans to do.
Over the next few weeks, water pipes will run from sinks and faucets in Market Central to the pool, said Tremain.
Consequently, the motto of ‘go trayless’ is being changed to ‘go tray/plate/bowl/cup/fork/knife/spoonless.’
Pitt students have had mixed reactions to the announcement.
‘Who cares?’ said one student, who quickly walked away from the interview.
The student environmental group, Students Taking Action to Save The Inner-Mongolian Rain Forest!, was elated with the news, said president Jim Bohwling.
‘It’s a great step for the environment, and one that is too long in coming,’ said Bohwling, before returning to a protest against water waste at Trees Hall.
