The column astutely identifies the underlying impetus for the opposition to same-sex marriage when he asks, ‘At what point in American history did it become acceptable, and even commonplace, for the government to interfere with matters of religion?’ ‘ ‘ ‘ Like Mr. Stokum, I see a rising threat from those who would destroy constitutional protections that have previously excluded the United States from the religious tyranny that is becoming more commonplace in today’s world. ‘ ‘ ‘ Like proponents of Islamic Sharia law, the opponents of same-sex marriage have only one goal: the imposition of their religious beliefs on everyone.
