Man shot and killed by police on Bates Street

A man was shot and killed at about 3 p.m. today on the corner of Bates and Atwood streets,… A man was shot and killed at about 3 p.m. today on the corner of Bates and Atwood streets, according to an officer at the scene.

Dennis Raspunti, a witness, said the man had approached his landlord and threatened him with a knife inside a storefront next to Mad Mex restaurant.

Both ran outside, and a police officer on the scene repeatedly told the man to drop the knife. Raspunti said he watched the scene unfold from his front porch at 347 Atwood St.

The man did not drop the knife, and the officer fired a shot at him, killing him, said Raspunti.

The white man who had been shot and handcuffed laid on the sidewalk footsteps away from the entryway to Mad Mex restaurant and bar on the corner of Bates and Atwood.

Police taped off the intersection, and four police cars and an ambulance surrounded the scene.

The city police will hold a press conference about the incident later today, an officer said.
