Relive your high school prom for AIDS awareness

Shake the dust off your old prom dress or rent a tux to raise money for AIDS relief this… Shake the dust off your old prom dress or rent a tux to raise money for AIDS relief this Friday with Pitt’s chapter of the Student Global AIDS Project.

Now in its second year, the organization’s “Prom: (Safe) Sex and the City” will be held in the Lower Lounge of the William Pitt Union from 8:30 p.m. until midnight.

This year the proceeds with be donated to the Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force (PATF), a nonprofit organization that provides assistance to those living with HIV and AIDS in and around the city.

While the student group is encouraging everyone to dress up in old prom outfits – most likely hanging in everyone’s closet back home – there is no dress code.

According to the Student Global AIDS Project, anything goes, from casual to dressy formal.

To promote safe sex, the Pitt student group will also be giving out free condoms to everyone who attends the event.

This year there will be a food drive for PATF’s pantry. Everyone who brings in a non-perishable food item will receive a ticket for the night’s raffle. The Student Global AIDS Project will accept a maximum of five items for five tickets.

Hoping to make the event annual, each year the Student Global AIDS project chooses a different charitable organization for which it raises money. This year, the chapter has focused on helping the Orphan Support Program of Karagwe, Tanzania.

Last year, Pitt’s chapter was able to raise enough funds to build a house in Tanzania with the efforts from its prom.

Tickets for the event are $5 in advance or $7 at the door.
