Nope, wearing the glass slipper this year is none other than (drum roll, please) … No. 15 seed in the South region, the Austin Peay Governors.
Well, according to the world of video games anyway.
In a simulation of the NCAA Tournament on NCAA March Madness ’08 for XBOX 360, the Governors upset No. 2 seed Texas and then No. 7 Miami to advance to the Sweet 16.
Austin Peay was not alone in the pool of double-digit seeded teams to make the final 16. In fact, it lost to No. 11 Kentucky in the Sweet 16 contest.
Kentucky reached the regional final against Memphis, and the Midwest’s No. 12 seed Villanova also played its way into the Elite Eight.
No. 11 Baylor also reached the Sweet 16 in the simulation.
The one other major upset also came from the Midwest region. No. 14 seed Cal State Fullerton from the Big West knocked off Wisconsin in the first round, but lost to USC in its next game.
North Carolina won the National Championship in the simulation, defeating Memphis in the title game, 86-66.
Pitt advanced to the Sweet 16 in its usual manner but dropped a close one to eventual runner-up Memphis, 84-80.
This was all just a simulation, of course, but when Austin Peay shocks the world, you heard it here first.
