Dear Editor,

I would like to respond to Monday’s editorial, “Prophetic Pennsylvania,” accusing Hillary of not focusing on rallying students on college campuses. The article strangely faulted Hillary for beginning to campaign in Pennsylvania the week following the Mississippi primary; a week, which happened to be spring break for Pitt and CMU.
Meanwhile, that same week Chelsea Clinton visited Point Park University (not on spring break) and Bill Clinton visited Washington and Jefferson College (also not on spring break).
The accusation that the Hillary campaign is not reaching out to young and college voters is ludicrous! Further, by stating this, The Pitt News is perpetuating a stereotype instead of doing their research.
In conclusion, the Democratic Party is experiencing a unique phenomenon – a new focus by BOTH candidates on young people. Hillary and Obama have both discussed programs to fix student loans and ways to eliminate college debt.
Finally, the statistics show that young people are voting; the number of 18- to 24-year-olds going to the polls was 36 percent in 2000 and 47 percent in 2004 and both campaigns are smart enough to know this.
Sincerely,
Lissa Geiger president College Democrats
