Pitt downs Hoyas in first match of season

The Pitt women’s tennis team got off to a strong start Saturday, winning its season-opener… The Pitt women’s tennis team got off to a strong start Saturday, winning its season-opener against Georgetown, 6-1.

Junior Kristy Borza, the fastest Panther ever to 100 victories, won her singles match and also teamed up with Elizabeth Adams to take home a come-from-behind victory in doubles.

The Panthers went on to sweep the Hoyas in doubles, winning all three matches.

Borza, a back-to-back team MVP and the first Pitt player in history to earn an Intercollegiate Tennis Association ranking, had a school record with 27 wins last season.

The Panthers, who failed to qualify for the Big East championships last season, are 4-1 against Georgetown in their last five meetings.

Pitt defeated Georgetown by the same score last year and has won its last seven season-openers.

The Panthers stay at home to face Army on Thursday afternoon. The Black Knights took down Connecticut on Saturday, 4-3, earning their second-straight victory.

Borza could have an interesting matchup against Army’s Anne Houghton, who was 4-0 in her singles matches last week.

Houghton, a freshman, won individual state championships in both men’s and women’s competitions in high school.
