I was very pleased to read recently Carolyn Gerecht’s column, “Facts about eating disorders shocking.” As the registered dietitian at the University’s Student Health Service, I am only too aware of students here suffering from not only eating disorders, like anorexia and bulimia, but an entire spectrum of disordered eating issues.
Common are concerns of body image and self-concept. When we as a society start to look critically at widely held standards for physical attainment and beauty will we begin to de-mystify these disorders. While students may worry or fear, they need only come forward, and we at Pitt will tend to them medically, psychologically and nutritionally.
As a member of the staff at Student Health Service I am available to discuss a wide range of topics including, but not limited to, eating well on campus, eating well off-campus, weight management, vegetarian and other special diets, disordered eating, concerns with eating and sports nutrition. For more information on scheduling a free one-on-one Nutrition Consultation visit www.studhlth.pitt.edu/healthed or call 412-383-1830.
