Poets offer free V-Day verses

Forget Cupid’s arrow, some Pitt students want to spread the love today in the form of poetry…. Forget Cupid’s arrow, some Pitt students want to spread the love today in the form of poetry.

The William Pitt Union will host the Three Rivers Review poetry writing booth from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today in honor of Valentine’s Day.

The Review, a Pitt Honors College publication, will have a staff of about five writers on hand to write love (or hate) verses for significant others, friends and enemies alike.

Poems take between a few minutes to write and can be written on festive sheets of paper and delivered on the spot, e-mailed later in the day or posted on the Review’s blog.

All poems are free of charge.

Created by Pat Smith, editor in chief of the Review, as an effort to promote the magazine, this is the second semester of the poetry booth.

Last semester, about 30 to 40 students stopped to have poems written and picked up a copy of the magazine.

“We had a great response last semester, and we’re hoping for an even better response this time,” Smith said. “A lot of people connect Valentine’s Day with female sensitivity, but we think that a lot of guys will get poems written for their girlfriends. It’s a good way to suck up if [the girlfriends] are mad at them.”
