McCoy was named… The Pitt football season is over and LeSean McCoy is still earning awards.
McCoy was named the Big East Rookie of the Year yesterday, as voted on by the Big East coaches, and also joins teammates Scott McKillop and Jeff Otah as first-team All-Big East selections. Defensive end Joe Clermond was a second-team selection.
Joining Larry Fitzgerald in 2002 and Tom Tumulty in 1991, McCoy is only the third Pitt player to earn the Big East Rookie of the Year distinction.
McCoy’s 38-carry, 148-yard performance in Pitt’s historical upset of West Virginia last Saturday put him at 1,328 yards for the season – a Big East freshman record. He also rushed for 14 touchdowns, breaking Tony Dorsett’s record of 13 set in 1973.
McKillop, a unanimous first-team selection at linebacker, finished the year with 151 total tackles, and led the nation in tackles per game with 12.58.
Otah, the team’s offensive captain in his second year since transferring from Valley Forge Military Academy, was chosen as a first-team offensive tackle.
Clermond is Pitt’s defensive captain, and earns his second All-Big East distinction in as many years. He finished his senior season as Pitt’s leader in sacks with 10.5.
Both McCoy and McKillop, a junior, return next year.
