Gavin, the No. 1-ranked wrestler in the country in the 174-pound weight class, is only the fourth Pitt wrestler to earn an invitation to the tournament, which selects only two wrestlers from each of 10 weight classes ranging from 125 pounds to 285 pounds.
Gavin, a fifth-year senior, will wrestle against the No. 2-ranked wrestler in his weight class, Navy’s Matt Stolpinski.
An NCAA All-American and national runner up in the same weight class last year, Gavin is just the fourth Pitt wrestler ever to earn an invite and is the first since 1996.
The Pitt wrestling team competes at the Cornell Invitational Saturday, and Gavin will go straight from Cornell, in Ithaca, N.Y., to the Classic in Oregon.
