Torre, who led the Yankees to four World Series wins and 10 division titles, rejected a contract offer of one year for $5 million guaranteed, with $1 million in bonuses for each tier of the playoffs reached.

In a recent interview with the Bergen (N.J.) Record, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner said he was doubtful that the Yankees would try to resign Torre if the team failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs this year.
