Eight of them suited up for Pitt’s annual Blue-Gold exhibition on Sunday at the Petersen Events Center, and Pitt women’s basketball gave the crowd a tightly contested four-on-four scrimmage.
When the dust cleared, Pitt’s Blue and Gold squads combined to shoot 26 percent, and Blue outlasted Gold 22-20.
Junior Xenia Stewart scored 11 points for the Gold squad and was the only player in double figures.
“That was more competitive than maybe what I would have assumed,” Pitt head coach Agnus Berenato said.
“I’m disappointed in the shooting percentage. We had two days on Thursday and Friday where we were able to play five-on-five.”
Returning starters Marcedes Walker and Shavonte Zellous led the Blue squad, combining for 15 points and 15 rebounds.
The injuries also gave Pitt fans and Berenato a chance to evaluate the incoming freshmen on Pitt’s roster.
Freshman guard Taneisha Harrison showed an ability to get to the basket, totaling five points for the Gold squad.
Highly touted recruit Shayla Scott played with Walker, Zellous and senior point guard Karlyle Lim for the Blue squad. Scott grabbed three rebounds and scored four points.
But the injuries and tattered roster marred any significant chance to capture a feel for Pitt’s actual team.
“They have got to pick up their mental intensity when they’re just doing shooting drills at practice,” Berenato said. “I was pleased with the competitiveness
