The media is filled these days with questioning and caring articles regarding children and immunizations. Your Oct. 19 editorial “Myths perpetuate vaccine fears” prompts me to clarify a concept regarding Christian Scientists included in your perspective. My family includes five generations of people who have deeply valued the study of Christian Science and who have experienced healing through prayer. This isn’t new; it is the ongoing history of spiritual healing and protection that is the foundation of the Bible.

Like all caring parents, Christian Scientists desire to keep their families healthy and safe. They are law-abiding and they care about the health and safety of those around them. Those who choose to rely on Christian Science treatment do so because this prayer-based system of healing is a proven method of preventing and curing disease. So, it’s not that Christian Scientists “condemn vaccines” – they know they have a choice as to whether to vaccinate their children – but they typically choose a method of healing that, for them, has been effective and safe.
