Primanti Brothers responds to the needs of Pittsburgh’s hungry in sandwich form. From its early history, Primanti Brothers has served authentic Pittsburgh sandwiches.

Modern-day Primanti Brothers serves much more than just sandwiches, however. A student who visits its Oakland location today can choose from the best of Primanti Brother’s sandwiches, salads and hot meals like soups and chicken fingers.

For those who are familiar with the “stereotypically Pittsburgh sandwich,” Primanti Brothers started it all. You can actually get a sandwich with French fries and cole slaw on it.

Primanti Brothers also features a laid-back atmosphere that will prove attractive to students of all culinary bents.

Quiznos is a great place to have a sandwich made quickly and enjoy it without undue fuss. Featuring a fast-food restaurant atmosphere and an easy ordering system, students can simply go into a Quiznos, specify the ingredients he wishes included on his sandwich and have it made fresh.

Quiznos features the good old American, made-to-order sandwiches along with its menu of gourmet, pre-designed sandwiches.

Sandwiches include both hot toasted and cold subs. In addition to Quiznos’ menu of subs and sandwiches, customers can order gourmet salads and soups and can round off their meals with a standard list of sides and desserts.

Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwich Shop 3444 Forbes Ave. 412-681-9010 $ Panther Funds? Yes

Jimmy John’s provides a taste of good old sandwich making. Providing a casual atmosphere of good cooking, Jimmy John’s is a good place to just sit and enjoy fresh ingredients.

Its menu includes sub and “giant club” sandwiches, each with its own story and taste combination. Flavors include Italian, turkey, seafood, beef and, for the more health-conscious customers, vegetarian.

To round off a meal, a customer can choose anything from the simple soda, chips and a pickle, to hot peppers and cookies. For those customers who are truly adventurous, Jimmy John’s produces the “J. J. Gargantuan,” a sandwich its website claims is “huge enough to feed the hungriest of all humans.”

Panera Bread manages to be both a fast food restaurant and a hip meeting spot, serving sandwiches with sophisticated and exotic ingredients. The atmosphere of Panera Bread is instantly modern, providing a progressive atmosphere in which to enjoy tasty, often exotic sandwiches.

Panera Bread’s menu includes sandwiches on trendy ciabatta bread, healthy and tasty salads, as well as its famous “soup in a bread bowl.”

Panera Bread does retain its fast food heritage, however, and provides all of its sandwiches inexpensively and will deliver them with only a short amount of wait time.

For lunch, dinner or just a snack, Panera Bread will provide a meal everyone can enjoy.

Duranti’s is an excellent example of a good, upscale sit-down restaurant in Oakland. With cloths on the tables and centerpieces, Duranti’s is not somewhere you would run in for a quick sandwich.

For a customer with more time to sit and enjoy, Duranti’s serves gourmet lunches and dinners featuring fresh produce and the finest cuts of meat. Sandwiches at Duranti’s have a flair of sophistication and provide the best of Oakland cuisine.

Duranti’s does, however, manage to serve its food with a delightful air of relaxation. The atmosphere is laid back and elegant. Don’t forget to make a reservation when you come in for lunch or dinner.

Featuring a college-themed menu and a laid back atmosphere, Campus Deli provides sandwiches for all types of tastes.

Customers can choose from multiple types of sandwiches, all served with chips and a pickle. To customize a sandwich, a customer can choose his favorite bread, cheese and toppings.

To those from Philly, you should try Campus Deli’s take on the cheese steak. It’s rumored to be the best in Pittsburgh.

Carnegie Cafe 4400 Forbes Ave. 412-622-3225 $$ Panther Funds? No

The Carnegie Cafe provides a great sandwich service for those students among the Pitt population with an artistic bent.

It is affordable, yet trendy, and is located in the Carnegie Museum of Art. Weary Pitt students can get into the museum for free and then enjoy a laid back, yet quickly delivered meal at the Carnegie Cafe.

The Carnegie Cafe is thrilled to have both students and faculty as customers and is very proud of its proximity to Pitt.

Food for Thought, a small deli in Oakland, provides a menu of old-fashioned deli favorites, including tasty pastrami and thick, enticing soups.

As its food is made with the finest ingredients and delivered with a smile, Food for Thought is an excellent place to run in and grab a quick sandwich.

Customers can also sit and enjoy their sandwiches in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

For customers with a healthier bent, Food for Thought also provides gourmet salads, using the finest ingredients. Food for Thought also offers a buy-one-get-one-free deal on Saturdays. Check it out for good, affordable food.

Whether you’re looking for hot sandwiches or cold wraps, Camille’s Sidewalk Cafe has the flavors to suit your palate, not to mention the prices to suit your budget.

Two can dine for under $10 weekdays after 5 p.m., and the deal applies all day for holidays and weekends.

If you’re looking for breakfast in a snap, you’re sure to find some healthy, all-natural options here. The restaurant features a “yoatmeal” smoothie – blended yogurt and oatmeal. While much of Red Oak’s fare is prepared after you order, you can also pick up a quick nutrition bar if you’re on the go.

A new addition to Oakland, the Red Oak Cafe offers organic goods in a sea of college-town fast food.
