Rodriguez belted home runs No. 50 and 51 off Kansas City’s Brian Bannister, giving him the major league single season record by a third baseman. Rodriguez also became the first Yankee to achieve the 50 home run feat since Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle both did it in 1961.
(CBSSportsLine) Ann Arbor, Mich. – The Oregon Ducks marched into the Big House and handed Michigan its worst defeat in 39 years.
Just one week removed from their debacle against Appalachian State, the Wolverines were manhandled by Oregon. The Ducks recorded 624 total yards on their way to a 39-7 rout.
Michigan quarterback Chad Henne left the game in the second quarter with an undisclosed leg injury. He is expected to miss next week’s game against Notre Dame, which also lost for the second time in as many games.
(New York Daily News) Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. – Erratic-pitcher-turned-super-slugger Rick Ankiel received a year’s supply of Human Growth Hormone in 2004, according to a New York Daily News report.
Ankiel had been baseball’s feel-good story of the summer until the story broke Friday, the morning after Ankiel homered twice and drove in seven runs against Pittsburgh.
Ankiel told ESPN.com that he has not done anything wrong, and insists he stopped using HGH when it became a banned substance in 2005. Ankiel is not being accused of anything at this time, but Major League Baseball said they would look into the report.
