According to witnesses, the student was trying to make a left-hand turn across oncoming traffic into the driveway of Doherty Apartments – CMU-owned student apartments where “Andrew” was said to live – when a black Mercury sedan traveling in the same direction hit him from behind at approximately 9:12 p.m.
Police at the scene said the student was in critical condition. According to Pittsburgh police Srgt. Brian Elledge, the student had a cut on his head, and his leg was severely injured, “probably broken.”
The elderly man driving the vehicle did not suffer any major injuries and was able to drive away from the scene on his own, although the upper right portion of his front windshield was cracked.
Police said the student was rushed to UPMC Presbyterian.
