This week, dubbed Hip-Hop Week on Pitt’s campus by WPTS-Pittsburgh, culminates in a hip-hop showcase featuring various local artists. These performances, collectively titled “State of the Union,” take place Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in the William Pitt Union Assembly Room and patio.

Performers include Wiz Khalifa, The BNVz, Eviction Notice, The Sole Vibe, Da Button Pusha of JPB, inc., Cynik Lethal, Kellee Maize and Basick Sickness.

The Sole Vibe is comprised of seven members, including The Whooligan, Keelay and Mario Dones. They aim to represent different elements of the diverse hip-hop culture in their music.

Boasting a unique sound described as “hip-hop fusion,” The BNVz got its start in 2004, the year in which the group won the opportunity to rock the stage at Pitt’s Bigelow Bash. The group quickly amassed a fan base and released its debut CD, We’re Blowin’ Up, the following year.

Eviction Notice is known for weaving its sets seamlessly together like a DJ mixes tracks, performing a smooth melee of back-to-back songs. The group covers bands spanning the musical gamut – from The Beatles to Gnarls Barkley to Radiohead – adding its own original pieces to the mix.

Hip-Hop Week’s sponsor, WPTS is Pitt’s student-run radio station. The WPTS hip-hop department aims to promote urban music through its programming and by connecting with local urban culture.

In February, the station brought local hip-hop artists together with campus radio DJs and station executives for a networking event on campus. The success of this event prompted WPTS to host another gathering between University leaders and hip-hop artists.

To support your local artists and enjoy some quality music, drop by the Union Thursday evening for the “State of the Union.”
