The recent illness of Fidel Castro and his subsequent abdication of power to his brother,… The recent illness of Fidel Castro and his subsequent abdication of power to his brother, Raul, has drawn attention from people around the world. While many wait to see what will happen with the passing of Cuba’s notorious dictator, others are being a little more proactive.
The city of Miami has already begun plans for an official celebration of Castro’s death. Earlier this month, a committee was appointed to oversee preparations for the massive event to be held in the Orange Bowl, according to the Associated Press.
Musicians will perform at the celebration and specially designed T-shirts with a yet-to-be-determined theme will be produced. The venue will also offer a forum for people to speak and the media to report.
Maybe you’re wondering, “Why the Orange Bowl?”
Well, Miami City Commissioner Tomas Regalado, who is of Cuban decent, suggested the venue because of the symmetry it offers. In 1961, President Kennedy delivered a speech promising a free Cuba in the Orange Bowl, and in the ’80s, Cuban refugees camped out there after fleeing to America.
“Basically, the only thing we’re trying to do is have a venue, a giant venue ready for people, if they wish, to speak to the media, to show their emotions. It’s not that we’re doing an official death party,” Regalado said in the article.
